چکیده

When evaluating computer vision systems, we are often concerned with performance on a task-specific evaluation measure such as the Intersection-Over-Union score used in the PASCAL VOC image segmentation challenge. Ideally, our systems would be tuned specifically to these evaluation measures. However, despite much work on loss-aware structured prediction, top performing systems do not use these techniques. In this work, we seek to address this problem, incorporating lossaware prediction in a manner that is amenable to the approaches taken by top performing systems. Our main idea is to simultaneously leverage two systems: a highly tuned pipeline system as is found on top of leaderboards, and a traditional CRF. We show how to combine high quality candidate solutions from the pipeline with the probabilistic approach of the CRF that is amenable to loss-aware prediction. The result is that we can use loss-aware prediction methodology to improve performance of the highly tuned pipeline system.

A Primal-Dual Message-Passing Algorithm for Approximated Large Scale Structured Prediction

In this paper we propose an approximated structured prediction framework for large scale graphical models and derive message-passing algorithms for learning their parameters efficiently. We first relate CRFs and structured SVMs and show that in CRFs a variant of the log-partition function, known as the soft-max, smoothly approximates the hinge loss function of structured SVMs. We then propose a...

Efficient Second-Order Gradient Boosting for Conditional Random Fields

Conditional random fields (CRFs) are an important class of models for accurate structured prediction, but effective design of the feature functions is a major challenge when applying CRF models to real world data. Gradient boosting, which is used to automatically induce and select feature functions, is a natural candidate solution to the problem. However, it is non-trivial to derive gradient bo...

Constrained Sequence Classification for Lexical Disambiguation

This paper addresses lexical ambiguity with focus on a particular problem known as accent prediction, in that given an accentless sequence, we need to restore correct accents. This can be modelled as a sequence classification problem for which variants of Markov chains can be applied. Although the state space is large (about the vocabulary size), it is highly constrained when conditioned on the...

Minimum-Risk Training of Approximate CRF-Based NLP Systems

Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) are a popular formalism for structured prediction in NLP. It is well known how to train CRFs with certain topologies that admit exact inference, such as linear-chain CRFs. Some NLP phenomena, however, suggest CRFs with more complex topologies. Should such models be used, considering that they make exact inference intractable? Stoyanov et al. (2011) recently argu...

Gradient Boosting for Conditional Random Fields Report Title In this paper, we present a gradient boosting algorithm for tree-shaped conditional random fields (CRF). Gradient boosting, which...
